Chinese herbal medicine: whole-body healing from nature

Chinese herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years to treat both acute and chronic conditions. Rather than targeting symptoms in isolation, it works by restoring balance and energy flow throughout the body, supporting your health from the inside out.

How it works

Where Western medicine often focuses on a specific disease or symptom, Chinese medicine sees the body as a connected system. Health depends on the smooth, balanced flow of qi throughout that system. When something disrupts that flow, illness follows.

Herbal formulas, not single herbs

Chinese herbal medicine rarely uses a single herb in isolation. Instead, your practitioner will prescribe a carefully balanced formula, typically built around an "emperor" herb to address your primary concern, supported by "minister" herbs for secondary symptoms and "assistant" herbs to enhance the formula's effect and direct it to the right part of the body.

Restoring balance through opposites

Every herb is classified according to its "Four Natures": hot, warm, cool, or cold. Herbs are selected to create an opposing effect to whatever is causing the imbalance. A herb with cooling properties, for example, might be used to address heat or inflammation in the body.

Important Note

Chinese herbal medicine works best alongside, not instead of, conventional medical care. Always let your GP know if you are taking herbal medicines, particularly if you are on prescribed medication. Your practitioner will discuss this with you at your first consultation.
